Lou Luciani is one of the most experienced horse trainers in WA. He began in the business as an apprentice jockey in 1972 and was granted a Permit to Train in 1980. During that time he rode in races throughout the state before working as a horse breaker and stable foreman.
Since gaining his Permit to Train, Lou has been consistently selecting and training top class horses year after year - sprinters, stayers, two year olds and classic winners. After winning the Metropolitan Trainers Premiership for the first time in 1989, Lou then went on to win another seven Metropolitan Trainers Premierships. He has consistently ranked amongst the top few trainers in WA, and until 2005 held the record for the most winners trained in a season.
Lou has trained the winner of every major metropolitan race in his home state, as well as training Black Type winners in other states of Australia.

Lou has been training horses of mine for many years. Not only have I enjoyed huge success in my racing partnership
with Lou, but on a personal level I have also enjoyed many years of fun and a wonderful social friendship with him.
I value his honesty and his dependability

Dion Luciani grew up in his father's racing stables, and has lived and breathed the sport since the day he could walk. He signed up as an apprentice jockey at a young age, and had his first race ride at 15 years of age in 2003. Dion rode over 250 winners, out-riding his metropolitan allowance and graduating to senior ranks in record time. During his riding career he claimed the W.A Leading Apprentices title and several feature wins. A constant battle with weight ended the young hoop's short riding career, but his love and knowledge of the game opened up many doors in the industry.
During the next chapter of his life, Dion was Racing Media Executive for Perth Racing. He co-hosted Perth Racing's live on-air weekly simulcast into Singapore, along with other mounting yard and race day commentating. Whilst working at Perth Racing, Dion had formal training with leading television personalities and presenters. He also had an intensive in-house training program at SKY Channel in NSW, before returning home to work at his father's stables.
After managing Lou's horses as stable foreman for 18 months, Dion travelled overseas to gain further experience, working in leading racing stables in Europe. Travelling through England, Ireland and France opened his eyes to many training theories and methods used around the world.
Following several stints working in leading racing stables in the eastern states, Dion returned home to work as Assistant Trainer for his father for a further two years before joining him in a training partnership at the beginning of the 2011-2012 racing season.
I have been a client of the Luciani Racing Stables for many years and with great success (Perth Cup - King Canute; Karrakatta
Plate - Redwoldt; Sires Produce Stakes - Marooned Lady, Snooping).
I was delighted to learn that Dion Luciani will enter a training partnership with Lou as from 1 August 2011. With his
friendly personality, quest for knowledge, love of thoroughbreds and horsemanship, Dion has all the talents necessary to
make a great racehorse trainer. I am looking forward to further success with the Luciani team in the future.
